Carlsen: “I Would Beat Tal And Fischer”

i could be wrong, but unless someone with more credentials prove it, i believes its a correct statement and i see no reason why anand or caruana can't beat fischer.
All top modern day players would be able to beat Fischer or Tal, now or at their prime, the same way top sprinters today could beat Carl Lewis. Much of it is because they've benefited from the ways in which Fischer and Tal have influenced the game. It's no big deal. But when it comes to how we judge competitors, we have to do so while taking into account their historical context.
Bourbon53, I see your point that modern pianists are better than older pianists, but in practice I would say it's controversial.
There are such amazing pianists as Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Saint-Saëns, and many many others. And today there are not many such genius composers. Maybe I'm wrong. But can you name some modern composers, that are such great as Schnittke, Scriabin, other greatest musicians of the past? I don't think you can find much. There are a lot of very good musicians in electronic music. But in academic music it seems, that there is some stagnation.

Of course people who USED to be active and played a lot had higher ratings than when they returned to chess after a long time.
As the world progress the present should be better than the previous because of the knowledges that are accumulated as time goes. Do the chess world have a measurement or gauge for all the past GMs mentioned? Mr Carlsen has the benefit of improved foods and medicines. What about blind fold chess. It is one of the important attributes in chess including original ideas. OMG ten blind fold chess games simultaneously. Mr Carlsen should test his limit. He should be better the pass previous GMs.
We shouldn't compare the Fischer of 1972 to the Carlsen of 2015.There are 40 years of chess knowledge seperating them. It's amazing even at that time there were rumors that Fischer's peak was 2820.Capablanca is another underrated guy.Easily the most gifted player of all time.It would be great if they all time travelled to 2015.
It would be a more interesting statement to say "I would beat Tal and Fischer if I came of age in 1965 like they did." Of course, it would be difficult to make such a statement and impossible to check its accuracy.
Put Carlsen into a chess960 game with Bent Larsen, he couldn't win any single game against him. Tal, Fischer? No need to compare them with this Carlsen guy. By the way, this statement wasn't done by Carlsen himself as his opening preparation and his prearranged games. There is a bigger and larger mind behind this pawn (named Carlsen). He is just a pawn. Do I need to mention this evil mind?
#13 , you are right that we don't have composers comparable to the classics, but i believe its because the standards of music has changed. great composers do still exist.
