I just encountered 2 opponents one after the other who had takebacks turned on.
The first declined my takeback proposal after I explained it was a jokes move because I misclicked. It was frustrating because I went on to draw game when they were in a forced checkmate sequence before and I thought it was obvious to both of us I was 2-5 moves away from victory with nothing to stop me, only delay. But that's fine there are any number of reasons they could have refused:
1) Maybe they just didn't believe me that it was a misclick.
2) Have takebacks turned on in preferences by default.
3) Only give them to friends.
4) Opportunistically wanted to jump on misclick when the pressure was on in endgame.
5) Any number of other reasons
All fine in my opinion, I think miclicks are the most worthwhile reason to have takebacks turned on, to right a wrong that wouldn't ordinarily happen playing on a board in real life. But people can use them however they like or choose to have them turned off.
The second opponent started out by gloating to 'never underestimate the power of a queen' after I lost mine in a blunder, ironically I won with just rook against queen and bishop, and rooks are better at endgame in racing kings being less impeded by no check rule.
Then they admitted to never giving takebacks and only having it on as a helpful reminder when their opponent has blundered.
Now I've had people offering a draw when I am one move from victory to take pity on them and read of people in the forum explaining they use the draw tactic when it appears they are in a winning position against a naive opponent but they are actually losing.
But I think abusing the website platform in this way is particularly unfair, where takebacks are allowed but those who never intend to accept them don’t turn them off, making it appear that they are open to being asked.
What do people think is the best solution to this problem? A platform where you can ask to only be matched with others who accept takebacks? And how would you enforce it? I wouldn't want to turn this site into a popularity contest, but we all know the flaggers and opponents who only care about points and love to gloat when we encounter them. And then there are those that are going against the rules like harassers. Most of us don't enjoy playing them and wish we could avoid the whole experience rather than having to be satisfied with blocking them afterwards.
